"Smoldering Sea Smoke"

from $10.00

Port's Pierhead Light is surrounded by “sea smoke” in Port Washington Harbor

The Port Washington Breakwater Light was completed in 1935 at a cost of around $38,000. The metal Art Deco tower rests on a twenty-foot-square cement base that has large arches on each of its faces so it does not obstruct the view of mariners using the harbor. Here, the light is surrounded by dense sea smoke with pilings from an old pier in the foreground. The WE Energies power plant in Port helps create this dramatic “sea smoke” in cold winter harbor because it discharges relatively warm water into the lake, causing rapid condensation of water vapor that looks like smoke. The phenomenon also occurs naturally whenever cold air moves over a warm body of water.
