Stone steps lead to an upper room at Iona Abbey with a wooden door, a chair and moss/fern-covered walls
I happened upon this out of the way room as sunlight was pouring in throughout the abbey, including through a solitary window in this small space. The kaleidoscopic hues come from an authentic interplay between the natural light and the varied textures of the mineral and moss-stained stone walls. The old wooden door has the words, “Stand Fast” carved on the upper left side accompanied by Celtic knotwork. The wall ferns grew inside the room while this 13th century abbey was without a roof. When the roof was replaced, the ferns continued to grow. The tiny room is often used for quiet meditation and reflection.
