In 1136 AD, this Cistercian monastery of Eberbach was established on the right bank of the Rhine as one of the most successful Cistercian monasteries. Its first leader was Abbot Ruthard who moved into the complex with 12 monks at the time. This monastery is also where the Sean Connery movie, “The Name of the Rose,” was filmed.
