Dun is the Pictish word meaning “place of strength.” The word Dunnottar, originally “Dun Fother,” probably meant “Fort in the low country.” This castle has a rich history throughout the centuries that is worth delving into. It has played host to some of the Scotland’s greatest historical figures including William Wallace and Mary Queen of Scots.
