The name ‘Drunk’ is taken from the Dutch Creole word for ‘drowned’ – as this is a rare St. John bay that isn’t protected and calmed by a reef. Thus, a lot of shipwrecks and drownings happen off this windswept and wave pounded rocky beach.
One unique aspect of Drunk Bay is the seashell, coral, rock, and even sargassum art left by previous visitors. There are maybe 200 variations of ‘rock people’ at any given time, some even outfitted with tangled, vibrant sargassum hair. Some, like this creation, can be considered to be a bit more on the risqué side.
