A rocky and misty Battle Rock Beach at Battle Rock Wayside Park in Port Orford, OR.
Battle Rock Beach Wayside Park is named for the historic battle that took place there when the Quatoma tribe fought Capt. William Tichenor’s men in 1851. The captain left 9 of his men in the area of Port Orford and promised to return in 2 weeks after resupplying his ship in San Francisco. The Quatoma were not happy with the presence of outsiders and Tichenor’s men retreated from the beach to the sea stack which became the “Battle Rock” for the skirmish.
