""Edinburgh Castle"

from $10.00

Edinburgh Castle sits atop a rocky hill with lush green foliage growing on the hillside

Edinburgh Castle, perched on an extinct volcano, is a 900-year-old Scottish icon with roots dating back to the Iron Age. Serving as a premier royal residence until 1633, it houses St Margaret’s Chapel (c. 1130), the oldest building. As the most besieged site in Great Britain, it later became a major military garrison and prison.

Edinburgh has been besieged more than any other castle in Europe, and the Scots and English struggled over its control during the Wars of Independence. In 1314, Thomas Randolph, a relative of Robert the Bruce, led a daring night raid to reclaim it from the English.

Over the last 200 years, Edinburgh Castle has become a national icon.
