Mendenhall Valley was formed by Mendenhall Glacier over the course of roughly three thousand years. It was named for the American physicist and meteorologist, Thomas Corwin Mendenhall. The glacier reached its maximum advance during a neo-glaciation period that ended in the mid-1700s. The glacier's retreat uncovered the valley, which includes Mendenhall Lake and the Mendenhall River.
