The rock on which the Castle stands is a conglomerate known as a “pudding stone” and consists of large rocks and pebbles held in an immensely strong cementing matter, like raisins in a fruitcake. Dun is the Pictish word meaning “place of strength.” The word Dunnottar, originally “Dun Fother,” probably meant “Fort in the low country.” This castle has a rich history throughout the centuries that is worth delving into.
